Public Cord Blood Banking Knowledge Base
How do I donate to a public cord blood bank? I am due in about 4 weeks, and have been interested in Cord Blood Banking for research developement purposes. All of the private banks cost to much (insurance will not cover it) and most of the time it is held for your personal use, not to be used for research or to help others in need. I want to donate my baby's cord blood to a public bank (which is free and gets used to help others in need and/or for research). I have come up against a brick wall when trying to find a way to donate as there are no public banks in my area. Does anyone know of a way to donate to a public bank if it is out of your area? If you know of any that are in the central valley of California that would be helpful as well.
does anyone know about cord blood banking? anything about cord blood banking?? is it worth it? and what is the cost? is it better to do private or public cord blood banking?? trying to do our research for our little girl on the way! thanks for the help!
Can you donate cord blood to a public bank that is currently privately stored? I'm am looking to privately store the cord blood from my child. I understand that the likelihood of actually utilizing this cord blood is small. I also have evaluated the cost of private storage. My one hesitation, however, is that by privately storing, and possibly never using this cord blood, I am potentially denying it's use by someone who might have used it (via public storage). So my question is, can I at some point in the future 'transfer' or donate my privately stored cord blood to a public cord blood bank? I am not speaking about storing the cord blood myself at home. What I mean by 'private storage' is storing the blood at a private for-profit bank for my exclusive use. Sorry for not making that more clear.
cord blood banking!!!? is there such a thing as public cord blood banking in the uk?? i do kno of the private sector, but i guess im just wandering thanx in advance x
Cord blood banking? I heard once that you could donate you cord blood to a public bank . Has anyone actually done this and if so how do you get that process started? To be more specific I was actually wondering about donating it to a public bank, not the private banks. With the public banks you can donate for free and it goes to anyone in need not just you or your family.
Cord blood donation? Anyone here deliver a baby recently and not donate your cord blood to the public cord bank? If so, why?
Is it worth getting cord blood banked despite cost and no guarantee of future treatments being developed? The hospital where our baby is due to be born will not do the collection so we would have to arrange a private midwife to be on call to collect it and that is if the hospital will agree to them being there. We gather there are no current treatments to make banking the blood worthwhile and no guarantee there ever will be. Would the cost (around £1500) not be better spent elsewhere for the baby such as being put into savings a trust fund? Also the cord blood banks only keep it for 20 years. Half of the collection is given to public banks. Please answer asap as the baby is due in less than 3 weeks and we may run out of time should we decide to go ahead with it. Thanks everyone!
Your Medical Opinion on Cord Blood? I had a dual cord blood stem cell transplant last year for leukemia. I have a couple of questions about cord blood that I am interested in (this is not really in relation to my medical case) 1. If a person has the transplant using their own cord blood, is that still considered an auto transplant? Obviously I didnt have my own cord blood, but I almost did an auto peripheral blood stem cell transplant instead. I was given the opinion that ultimatly it would only be a time lengthening proceedure and that chances were high the leukemia would come back. Maybe that was specific to my case (aml, m1, 2nd diagnosis), but would that still be the same if you were to use your own cord blood? 2. Should you be allowed to privatly bank and/or sell cord blood? Everyone I talk to is for private banking, and a lot of people seem to be for selling cord blood. Both of my units came from the public bank. If I had had to have paid for it, buy it from someone else, I would never have gotten it. I wouldnt have the money to bank cord blood if I were to have a child. Because of my experience, I view cord blood as an organ. Organs cant be bought or sold, and I am not sure cord blood should be either (or privatly banked) for the same reason. Its no longer a fair game based on medical need. Its all about who can the most for it. What do you think?
Did you bank your baby's cord blood? My husband and I need to make a decision about banking our baby's cord blood. My decision is whether to pay the money to store it for our own use or to donate it for the use of the public. How often does this become necessary anyway? My concern is I would rather someone else who needs it get the use of it than to have it sit in a cord blood bank for God only knows how long, and have to pay all that money and then we end up never even needing it. I would rather someone else get some use from it who needs it than have that happen. My husband's concern is entirely different. He is wondering what the downside is, besides the money. He figures there must be a reason why EVERYONE doesn't do it, so he figures maybe stem cells don't help as much as they want us to believe (yes, he lives in a cave! lol!) While I've tried to explain to him that stem cells CAN'T effect you negatively, I don't think he really understands and he wants me to do more research. So my question is, did you bank your baby's cord blood, or do you plan to? Why or why not? Also, do you know anybody who has ever needed to withdraw it, and if so, for what? What was the result? Thanks for any help!
Cord Blood storing vs. Donating in British Columbia? Week 37 of pregnancy. Pros and Cons? I am expecting a baby in 20 days and would like to know if I should donate the umbilical cord blood or store it for our family members (we can afford it, but are big believers of donating to those who need it and in return being helped when we need it). There is still enough time to get it set up with a local (Vancouver, BC) private blood bank. I am also wondering if it's not too late to donate it to a public bank (not sure where the closest one is).
if you have herpes can you still bank your cord blood? i dont know where i got it from because i was married for 3 years when i had my first outbreak and NO neither one of us cheat, my husband doesn't even have it. but my question is, i am pregnant and would like to be able to save the cordblood in a private bank for ourselves. Can i still do it? because i know that public banks won't accept donations from people with herpes. and do you know why that is? Can you get herpes from blood? i wish i would have saved my first childs cordblood then this wouldn't even be a issue! Allie if you are uneducated in the subject then don't answer. herpes can come from clothing and toilets and i could have gotten it from before i was with my husband. and yes it is possible he doesn't get it even though we have unprotected sex. you're talking to a person who knows a lot more about it then you do. i don't need a lecture from some kid i asked a question about my childs cordblood because there is diabetes in our family and it could save my children from haveing 42 shots a week for the rest of their lives. i would much rather have herpes then all of the things cord blood can cure. Thanks twox2, its not like i wanted it and feel good about having. i was worried about people being cruel about it. thanks for being nice. my doctor said she is going to put me a valtrex before my due date so i dont have an outbreak so i REALLY hope i dont have to have a c-section. that thought scares me very much!!
