Cord Blood Benefits Knowledge Base
cord blood? anybody here has even benefited from cord blood banking?
Why do people preserve baby cord blood? I read on internet that people in some developed country are keeping the baby cord blood cells in a special blood bank for the future. Is it necessary? what are the benefits?
Cord Blood Banking? We can't afford to bank the babies cord blood, but I know how beeficial it is. Is there some way I can donate it so even though we can't store it some other child could benefit?
Cord Blood Registry - Should I? It's very expensive. Should we do it? I understand the benefits but what are the odds you will need this? Is it worth it? Did you do it with your baby?
Cord Blook Nazis? I had my baby 7 months ago. My hubby and I were sharing our memories when one horrible one popped up. Did you have cord blood harassment? My hospital gaves us like a 30 page document to read and sign if we wanted to donate cord blood. First, who the heck wants to read 30 pages when you are in pain?!?! I, personally, don't sign anything unless I read everything. Anyway, I declined because I could only read about 4 pages before the friggin pains intensified. Well, once we declined, we got harassed. Every nurse that came in kept telling us the benefit, etc. Also, once I declined, the once very nice nurse turned into an apathetic one. Anyone else experience this?
Benefits of circumcision? I DO NOT want this becoming a circumcision debate. I honestly do not care too much if you circumsized or did not circumsize your son. I do not need anyone tell me not to circumsize for this reason or that, so please, do not do that. We found out two days ago that our baby is 80% chance a boy (got a sneak between the legs and the "turtle" between the legs did not contain the blood flow the umbilical cord normally shows). The tech said that it is still early to make a definitive answer regarding the sex of the baby, but at this point, it's an 80% chance of a boy. My husband and I want to circumsize him. We have already decided that, but we're wondering what some of the benefits of a circumcision are? Also, if anyone knows, what is the avergae cost of a circumcision in Ontario and how early is the best time to have it done? We have heard it is cleaner, that it reduces the risk of penile cancer, and my husband would like his son to look like him, down there. I left the decision up to him, and he says he wants to circumsize our son, so we're circumsizing him. I just want to know what the benefits are. TheTotal..like I said, I don't want to hear arguments against it. If it causes him less pain as an infant, we'll do it as an infant. There will be no talking us out of it, and to say there are no benefits is bull.
Does anyone else find the process of stem cell research to be a little shady? I will admit to being ignorant of the in and outs of this research. First, aren't stem cells present in the umbilical cord? When I was pregnant, all sorts of info about banking the babies cord blood, due to the versatility of stem cells, seemed to say that they were. So, if these wonderful cells are present in umbilical cords, that we routinely throw away, why do we need recently fertilized eggs? Second, what could the possible benefit of having .1% of the dna in that egg be animal? (They are passing laws about this in Britian right now). How could studing something that would never occur in nature help the medical community? When has a disease ever occured where a doctor said "If only we had seen how animal dna effected stem cells, all the answers needed would be known." "If only we had a human-animal hybrid to illuminate this situation!!!" "I am sorry sir, in order for this us to be able to treat you we need to know the effect of the disease on an embryo with .1% animal dna"
Stem cell storage- would you pay for this?? I am tempted to do this? I am just wondering if any other expectant mums out there have heard of this....the blood taken from your babies umbilical cord before being thrown away, I have looked on the cells4life website and it sounds really interesting and a brilliant idea as the blood they collect and store for your baby, the cells can be used to replace damaged or abnormal blood cells as part of the treatment of some malignant blood disorders, such as leukaemia, as an alternative to bone marrow transplantation. The potential benefits of stem cell transplantation are that the cells are immediately available. Also help regenerate skin through burns and things like multiple sclerosis, stroke and alzheimers. It is expensive to do as the premium package costs £1500 and they store the cells for 25 yrs, thereafter you pay a yearly fee. Or £995 for a years storage and collection and after the year it is £50 per year. What do you think about this? Serious answers only plz
cord blood? does anybody know about information on the benefits (to baby) of delaying clamping of the umbilical cord until after it has stopped pulsing. also can i ask this of the staff at hospital when i give birth or is it policy for them to clamp and cut as soon as possible. you bring up a good point steve. dna i have no idea what you are talking about. the cord reacts with the air to stop the flow on it own. i am not planning to keep the cord open forever, just delay clamping for a few minutes.
