Umbilical Cord Blood Knowledge Base
How many are going to save the umbilical cord blood...? I'm 27 weeks pregnant and my husband and I are trying to decide if we should save the umbilical cord blood. We feel that it might be a good decision but we're just trying to get the opinions of other couples who are expecting. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!
stem cell created from umbilical cord blood can help muscular dystrophy? as i know, umbilical cord blood can created stem cell that can be cure to many disease. it is because it can combine with other stem cell without problem. so if muscular dystrophy patient (which is do not have dystrophine because their stem cell can't create dystrophine in their body) receive umbilical cord blood stem cell, would the cell develop the dystrophine? if it true, i think it would be great to muscular dystrophy patient like me. sorry if my english was bad.
Umbilical Cord Blood Retrieval vs Embryonic Stem Cell, Research, which is the better choice? a Nurse told me they could retrieve four times the amount of usable cells from the umbilical cord blood (usually discarded as the after-birth) in comparison to stem cell research. Say what? Why in the world would we go to all the expense and confrontation of continuing Stem Cell Research if this is the case? Anyone have a valid comparison? Moose-your comment is not helpful to the question. Being Condescending does not become you and is not an effective tool when thinking people gather together.
Can I bank cord blood if I have Single Umbilical Artery? I am pregnant and want to bank my baby's cord blood, however, the umbilical cord only has two vessels and one artery, or Single Umbilical Artery. I'm not sure if there is enough blood worth saving, or if it could be done. I will ask my midwife but I don't see her for a couple of weeks.
Experience With Umbilical Cord Blood Banking? No religious or political statements, please. BE RESPECTFUL! Just out of curiosity, is there anyone who has firsthand been grateful they took umbilical cord blood from their baby or has wished they had. My adopted brother with cerebral palsy was told by his doctor if it had been done, tests and such could have been performed to have helped. Never had the chance due to him being born and abandoned in a 3rd world country. Just curious if anyone has done it and benefited or wished they had. Thanks!
Cost Of Umbilical Cord Blood Banking In Canada? My husband and I are thinking of banking our daughters cord blood when she is born in January. Just wondering what the cost and procedures are to do so? Would insurance cover it? 25 weeks & 3 days with Baby a baby girl after TTC for 2.5 years! Thanks!
Mismatched Umbilical Cord Blood Transfusion- how safe is it? Hi, I have been struggling to find a treatment using umbilical cord blood for thalassemia disease of my cousin who is in Kolkata, India. Finally I found and got reply from reliance bio sciences that they can provide an Umbilical Cord Blood unit for 2.5 lacs, if matched unit is available. I have been analysing the medical literature where even not-fully-matching umbilical cord blood also have been given for treatment. I would like to know about the general outcome of mismatched umbilical ord blood unit treatment and the hospitals where its done in India
Umbilical Cord Blood Banking? I am strongly considering saving my baby's umbilical cord blood, but I want to hear from someone who has done it first. Has anyone here had a good or bad experience involving cord blood? Anyone know the most affordable way of doing it? Is it worth it? Anyone due soon and considering it?
Is a husband able to cut the umbilical cord if we're donating the cord blood? I'm wondering if the routine changes when cutting the cord. We want to donate the cord blood, but my husband would like to cut the cord when the baby's born. Will he still be able to do that or will the doctor have to do it for donation purposes? In response to Vegan-We're actually donating to a public bank, b/c we can donate for free. Most studies show that if baby has a problem, they can't have their own cells back anyway, so we figured someone might as well have a chance to use it. Otherwise, it's just garbage.
Has anyone here saved their baby's umbilical cord blood? What do I need to know? Are there any loopholes I need to look out for? Which service should I use? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Why do they ask questions? Aren't they just storing the cord blood? Which service did you go with? I know there are lots of sites out there but I want to know personal experiences. The company is not going to tell you they suck at what they do. LOL Also, can the cord blood be used on the child if the child was born without cancer but developed it later in life?
umbilical cord blood and diabetes? My husband has type 1 diabetes. I'm 4 months pregnant and someone told me that I should store my baby's umbilical cord blood when he's born since it can cure the father from diabetes when there is match. Is it true? or have you heard of similar cases?
When ones own bone marrow can help cure spinal cord injury, why save umbilical cord blood? The recent report by the Chennai (India) based Japanese group NCRM (http://www.ncrm.org/media/pm12jun07.htm) that one own bone marrow stem cells can cure spinal cord injury, why do we save Umbilical cord blood cells for? I can unserstand that it is useful for Leukemias but whats the probability of one becoming a victim to the disease against the cost efefctiveness based on the outcome? Sometimes it leads me to think there is too much claim for usage of UCB from the industry where you shelve off 3000 USD but silently in India they are offering ones own bone marrow stem cell treatment for spinal cord injury...could any one clarify this controversy?
One blood vessel in the umbilical cord instead of three? My best friends having a baby, shes 6 months along and the doctor told her the umbilical cord only had one blood vessel instead of the normal three. She said all the doctor would tell her is that shed be needing to come in for alot more sonograms. Anyone know what could of caused this? What could happen to the baby and if she should worry?
Please guide which is better for spinal cord injury: One's own stem cells or umbilical cord blood stem cell? My cousin being a victim to spinal cord injury we are planning for his own bone marrow stem cells treatment by NCRM (http://www.ncrm.org/) - Life line hospital, Chennai group. But the first such success having been reported by a korean team in which umbilical cord blood has been used (http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/200411/kt2004112617575710440.htm) I wonder whether there is any reliable institute in India offering this treatment using umbilical cord blood. When my sister delivered a baby we understood there are more than 7 companies in India storing the umbilical cord blood stem cells, but none were confident enough to say they could offer treatment for such diseases. can any one guide me with?
Umbilical Cord blood banking? Has anyone here banked their baby's Umbilical cord blood? How expensive was it? Did your insurance cover any of it?
umbilical cord blood taken? when i had my daughter at 37weeks due to pre-eclampsia i can vaguely remember them taking the blood from the umbilical cord attached to the placenta with a needle. I wasn't really with it at the time so have no idea why they would have done this, as i didnt mention anything about stem-cells to them etc... anybody have any ideas why they would have done this?
Umbilical Cord Blood Question - Collection at time of birth without parent consent? When my son was born my husband said that the doctor was collecting blood from the umbilical cord into a small tube. There was so much going on at the time that we never asked why he was doing it (we were exhausted and overwhelmed) and it's been over a year since and I haven't had the opportunity to ask. Does anyone know why the doctor would be collecting blood? Is this typical? The doctor never mentioned a word about this. There is so much information now about cord blood collection (private and donated) that I want to make sure the doctor didn't use it without our permission (although I do know there is a large fee for private, so I know this isn't what happened, but we are not sure if he donated it). Wouldn't the doctor have to get permission from us? Or is the blood used to run test on the newborn? How much blood is needed for a donation? Just unsure of all the medical stuff. Could someone please explain...it just bothers me every time I think of it! I would love an answer to hopefully put my mind at ease! :) Thanks!!
Saving umbilical cord blood? I know most of the technical pros and cons such as the cost but the ability to save your child if need be. I'm not having a baby, I was just thinking about it because of my sister and for future reference. Have any parents out there actually saved their childs cord blood? If so, do you mind sharing the story with us, especially if you have needed to use it? I feel that it is too expensive and it will be such a rare thing to actually need it but the guilt of possibly needing it when the child is older makes me confused of whether people should do it or not. Just curious. Thanks for your time in answering!
Why kill Mini Me when you can use umbilical cord blood, rich in stem cells, as artificial aint worked, right?? Nature's Miracle Substance: Umbilical Cord Blood Aimee Herd - John Mckenzie, Lenny Bourin – ABC News - (Jul 12, 2008) It does not involve the killing of human embryos, and it has been used to treat over 60 diseases, including Leukemia, Sickle Cell Anemia and blood cancers. Umbilical cord blood contains wonder-working stem cells. But all too often this "miracle substance" is simply disposed of. According to Dr. Elizabeth Shpall, head of the M.D. Anderson Cord Blood Bank, it is still a "vast majority" of women who do not realize what they are allowing to be thrown away when they don't allocate their newborn's umbilical cord blood to be donated. Yet, this wonderfully stem-cell-rich substance has been used to successfully treat so many diseases Many pregnant women are simply not aware of the medical value and the opportunity for treatments that can come from donating the cord blood when their baby is born. The fact is, umbilical cord blood is the perfect supply of stem cells OK? I'm thinking about banking my baby's umbilical cord blood.? I recieved an E-mail about it after signing up for baby zone after I found out I was pregnant. I started reading it and it said my baby's cord blood could cure my osteoporosis. Does anyone know anything about this or done it. They say there is enough stem cell in one umbilical cord to help many people. It is very expensive and just want to know what others think. I think it's worth the money. (even if it can't help me) If I can't afford it I will at least donate it. I'm am not killing a helpless child to get the stem cells!!!! I am giving life to a beautiful healthy baby, my gift from God!! I just want to use the umbilical cord blood, which is going in the trash. I am a christian I know the rules I would never hurt an unborn child to get them!! I THINK IT IS ANOTHER GIFT FROM GOD JUST LIKE MY CHILD IS!! My husband's sister died a week before he was born(age 5) with Hurler's syndrom and we both have a history of diabetic's in our family, both baby's G-ma's and 1Great G-ma. I could give my child my osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.
Do obstetricians routinely encourage mothers to donate umbilical cord blood to help save leukemia patients? I read an article that mentioned that teammates of a leukemia patient called obstetricians to encourage them to get mothers to donate umbilical cord blood because the stem cells have a lower rejection rate than bone marrow. This brought up a question for me: Do obstetricians who work at hospitals that donate to cord blood banks NOT already routinely ask their patients if they want to donate cord blood? It seemed from a website that I went to that expectant mothers have to request cord blood collecting kits at least 4 weeks before delivery themselves. Are they being actively made aware of this option by their doctors or is it something that they have to find out about and request on their own? There's absolutely no cost to the mothers who donate cord blood whatsoever because the cord blood banks pay for it and it could help save lives so I'm curious.
Stem cells - is the umbilical cord blood banking the only option? My almost 4 y.o. daughter had a birth trauma which resulted in the severe kidney damage. Now I'm about to deliver a baby boy and considering an umbilical cord blood banking just in case it may help her in the future. My friend just told me that she've read somewhere that the umbilical cord blood is not the only way to get the stem cells, which rising a question: does it make any sense to invest almost $5000 in the viacord now? tried to google, but did not find anything on this matter. Have you heard anything? Any links, articles, other resources??? Thank you for any help!
Islet transplant/stem cells in umbilical cord blood? I have a 7 year old son who has type 1. I found out yesterday that I am pregnant. My sons endo told me today that one of the problems with the islet transplant was that some of the recipiants bodies would reject the islet because they were from strangers. Does anyone have any good info about this? Would it be possible to use the cord blood?
why is there so much controversy over umbilical cord blood? i dont know much about this subject at all except that some parents are choosing to freeze the blood from their new born babies umbilical cord and placenta for future use because it could potentially save the childs life in the case that something should happen. thats all i know about the subject and im hearing that a lot of people are saying that it is wrong or something and i dont understand why it would be wrong to do that. if its not hurting the child or mother what could possibly be wrong with doing this. can anyone shed some light on this situation, im a very curious person :D also im curious about stem cell research, another topic i am unfamiliar with. why is stem cell research bad when from what i gather can do SO much good and save so many lives once mastered. i read that they use embryos to do research with and that most of them come from left over from in-vitro fertilization? and that these embryos are in most cases discarded anyway, so where is the wrong? *** ps. im not posting these questions to start arguments or to offend anyone, i honestly know nothing about these subjects and i have a fascination with learning everything i possibly can. im am simply just a curious teen seeking knowledge***
Getting all the blood out of the umbilical cord before cutting it? My friend told me the other day that it is best for the umbilical cord to be completely flat before you actually cut it... so the baby can get all of the blood. She said it could take 45 minutes. Has anyone heard of this? And if so, did you do it? No No No.. right after delivery!!
Umbilical Cord Blood Banking suggestions...? I've been researching Viacord, Cryo-cell, CBR, and Family Cord Blood Services. I can't seem to decipher which one is the best and most trustworthy. I don't want to base it on price. They're all similar but some experienced testimonials would help too.
umbilical cord blood banking? has anyone done this, i would like to know the advantages, disavantages, cost, (in california) and any other information you can give me...thanks!
Do you think the storage of the umbilical cord blood cells of your child can be useful in the future? I have posted this question in the medical section but I would like to know what you, moms and soon-to-be-moms think. How seriously can I take this kind of "help" in case someone gets a severe disease in my family? Some doctors say it is just a waste of money because nobody has recovered due to this while some doctors say it can be beneficial in the future and these blood cells can be used in more and more cases as technology and medical research develops. It is uncertain who can use the cells besides the child/donor so it may happen that even though you have had the cells stored, your sick family member can't recover. In spite of the fact that there are so many questionable details about the storage of cord blood, do you think it is worth it because we don't know what developments are ahead of us or you wouldn't recommend it? I already signed a contract with a cell bank company, I just want to know the opinion of other people. It seems like it divides people very much. The company I signed up with said in case they go bankrupt or go out of business, they will take full responsibility to take the cells to another storage place. This is included in the contract. This is something that I am also afraid of since this is a long-term agreement but it seems like they have to take responsibility and I have their promise in writing so if this does not happen, I could even sue them. I agree that it is not very likely that we would need to use these cells (it is good if we don't need to) but who knows what might happen...I hope there will be more and more diseases that can be cured with the help of these cells.
Anyone keeping umbilical cord blood? I just decided yesterday that I am going to keep my son's wanted to know if anyone else is! Hildegardis Bingaensis- You send it to a cord bank incase your child ever has a life threatening disease. Don't you watch the news. Also found out yesterday that my nephew on my hubbies side has to get tested for leukemia. That made me reconsider saving the stem cell
two blood vessles in umbilical cord? My daughter is 2 months old tomorrow. I just got the umbilical cord report back and it showed that there were only two blood vessles instead of the normal three. The report said due to abnormal umbilical cord, careful evaluation of the infant for possible associaed congenital abnormalites is advised. My daughter has not showed any signs of having problems. At birth she was given an apgar score of 9 both at 1 minute and at 5. Did your baby have only two blood vessels? If my daughter did have problems would they have picked up on it by now? We're going to her doctor tomorrow for her two month appointment. But I'm freaking out now. Please help. Thanks.
What is Cord Blood i need it for a project? I'm doing a project on cord blood for sale the controversy or something I get that cord blood comes from the umbilical cord but if somebody could explain a little more like how they get it or what a stem cell is any of that would be great.
Blood not flowing to the umbilical cord properly? I went to the doctor today and was told that I might have to have the baby at 37 weeks taken because there was a test that shows that the umbilical cord is not sending enough blood flow to the baby. She said it might not be a big deal, since it only showed up on one of the Doppler's and they did a few. Has anyone had this occur? What is it? What does this mean?
Umbilical cord question...dried blood? My daughter is 10 days old today and when I was changing her diaper, I noticed some dried blood around her umbilical cord.....There's only a little bit and I it doesn't look infected or anything...What's this from and should I do anything? Her doc told me not to put any alcohol on it like they used to recommend. Thanks!
Question about cord blood donation... (The actual collection process!)? We've made arrangements to have our baby's cord blood donated, and have already received the kit in the mail & everything. (I'm 35 weeks) I was wondering, when they do the collection of the cord blood, do they do it before the cord is cut, or after the cord is cut? I was hoping to let the umbilical cord stop pulsating before having it cut - Is this out the question when collecting cord blood? It's fine with me if I can't have it that way now, I already have the kit and everything, I was just wondering how it was all done!
cord blood? does anybody know about information on the benefits (to baby) of delaying clamping of the umbilical cord until after it has stopped pulsing. also can i ask this of the staff at hospital when i give birth or is it policy for them to clamp and cut as soon as possible.
cord blood? does anybody know about information on the benefits (to baby) of delaying clamping of the umbilical cord until after it has stopped pulsing. also can i ask this of the staff at hospital when i give birth or is it policy for them to clamp and cut as soon as possible. you bring up a good point steve. dna i have no idea what you are talking about. the cord reacts with the air to stop the flow on it own. i am not planning to keep the cord open forever, just delay clamping for a few minutes.

Questions about umbilical cord at delivery? 1. When the baby is delivered, the umbilical cord is cut, but why does the cord stay on the baby until it falls off? 2. When the cord is cut and clipped, does unclipping it cause bleeding? 3. Why does the baby no longer need the maternal blood supply ex-utero?
Umbilical cord bleeding 3 weeks after stump fell off? My daughter is six weeks old and her umbilical cord fell off at 3 weeks. Today there is some dried blood on her belly button and in her onesie. Is it normal for there to be bleeding this late after her cord fell off? Should I call the doctor or wait and see if there is any more bleeding? Ok I called the Doctor, they said as long as there is no blood trickling out, no fever or smell to it, it's normal. Whew! Thanks!
baby umbilical cord fell off and smells bad? My 2 weeks old baby's umbilical cord just fell off. There still seems to be pinkish flesh within the middle of the bellybutton and there is a bad smell from the bellybutton. There seems to be no blood or pus coming out of the bellybutton and it is dry, Is this normal ?
Why bank your babies blood cord? I am pregnant with my first baby, and in magazines I read a lot of advertisements on banking your child's umbilical cord. Could someone explain the purpose of this. Is this to help in regards to stem cell research? What would be the plus side to donating? Why would some people decide not to do this? I just have no idea, what the purpose is and would like to make an informed decision. Some of your answers stated that it is costly to bank the blood rather then donate? Although money is no issue when it comes to my babies health, how much does it cost to bank it?
Donate Cord Blood deal? Has anyone ever donated this? Are there any bad effects I like to know information of someone who has done this! blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta is rich with blood-forming cells. These healthy blood-forming cells can be collected and stored so they can be used by a patient who needs a transplant!!
blood on the umbilical cord? my baby is a week old and i was just about to clean his umbilical cord and the swab that i was cleaning him with has blood on it ? i am nervous any advice
when will my babies umbilical cord fall off? My daughter is 2 months old now and still has her umbilical cord stump. When i took her to the doctor's they didn't seem too concerned about it but it wasn't for her well baby check so i'm not sure if they are just waiting til then or not. I read on the internet that it could be her white blood cell count is low. Has anyone else had this problem?
Is it okay for the umbilical cord to bleed? My son is 2 weeks old tomorrow, his umbilical cord has not fallen off yet, and it bleeds sometimes. The blood never gushes, but it will... ooze? out from around the stump. It doesnt seem to bother him, but there is an awful lot more blood than I'd like. Is this normal? he doesn't see the doctor untill next friday. Should I take him in earlier, or is the bleeding okay?
