How many people store Cord Blood Stem Cells? We are thinking of storing our expectant childs stem cells from their cord blood. Does anyone know who prevalent this is, I live in Europe but any numbers for America, Australia etc. would help. I have read quite a bit about it but usually from companies in the market so I am looking to see if there is some credibility to this by seeing how many people do it?
What do you think about storing the cord blood cells (stem cells)? I met a reliance stem cell marketing person who explained me ablout the storage of cord blood cells but I still dont understand whether it is really worth to store at a price of 74,900 for 21 years.
would you bank your kids cord blood stem cells? my wife and i plan on banking our childs cord blood stem cells with cord blood america. i was wondering if any one else has done this and if so who di you do it with and if no why.
What is the difference from Embryonic Stem Cells and Cord Blood Stem Cells? My husband and I currently have 4 children. At each of their births, we chose to have their cord blood collected and their stem cells stored at the Cord Blood Registry facility in Tucson, Arizona. When our first child was born in 1999, many people still did not know about cord blood and stem cells. Our youngest is 12 months old and it seems that more people are aware and interested in stem cell storage/usage. I have wondered a lot about the difference in ESC and the cord blood stem cells collected at birth. There are literally thousands of baby's born daily, why aren't mother's advised and/or given the option to donate their baby's cord blood? It may depend on morals or beliefs of the mother. Even if ESC's are better, shouldn't we still be concerned about saving the stem cells that are in cord blood? Is it a funding issue? I just couldn't waste my kids' cord blood, but #3 did have a small collection of only 29cc's (<1oz.).
Is it possible to make an identical twin of my baby from her umbilical cord blood stem cells? I would never want to do this, but I'm wondering if it is possible.
what is the purpose to preserve baby's umbilical cord blood stem cells at the time of his birth? Would highly appreciate to hear from guys who have already done it
Please guide which is better for spinal cord injury: One's own stem cells or umbilical cord blood stem cell? My cousin being a victim to spinal cord injury we are planning for his own bone marrow stem cells treatment by NCRM (http://www.ncrm.org/) - Life line hospital, Chennai group. But the first such success having been reported by a korean team in which umbilical cord blood has been used (http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/200411/kt2004112617575710440.htm) I wonder whether there is any reliable institute in India offering this treatment using umbilical cord blood. When my sister delivered a baby we understood there are more than 7 companies in India storing the umbilical cord blood stem cells, but none were confident enough to say they could offer treatment for such diseases. can any one guide me with?
What are cord blood cells, and do they have the same potential medicinal benefits as embryonic stem cells? Explain this statement: If more people would donate the cord blood then we wouldn't have to use the embryonic cells. What does this mean, and if it's true, why don't women do it? Is there any harm involved?

What is the reason they can't use CORD BLOOD to harvest STEM CELLS, instead of embryos? all they do with most of the cord blood, and the rest is throw it away. Why isn't it recognized or studied?
Stem cells and cord blood? If this is a "humane" and safe way to get stem cells, why do we not hear more about it? Why do hospitals simply discard this vital resource? I agree with banking cord blood and I agree with donating it. Now I don't know everything about this discussion and that is why I'm asking. I am hoping to learn a little more. http://www.cordblood.com/cord_blood_faqs/cord_blood.asp Crusader: The point of using cord blood is that it DOESN'T require the use of human embryos. It comes from the umbilical cord after the baby is born. :0) From everything I have been reading, embryonic stem cells tend to grow out of control and don't seem to work as well as adult stem cells. By the way, I purposely avoid right to life sources so that I can be sure the information is not biased. I try to read scientific journals, etc. regarding these type of things.
What's the difrance bettween cord blood and emyonic stem cells? I'm doing a realllly huge research projest on it, and I can't find the answers ANYWHERE. help? :]
Does blood type matter for using stem cells from cord blood? My 9 year-old niece has Spina Bifida, and we just found out that her bladder is not functioning, and in fact is leaking. She needs her back operated on to straighten it out, which would help her bladder, but would stunt her growth. Right now, she is only the size of a 2 or 3 year old as it is. One of the other options, however, would be to use stem cells to repair her bladder. My brother and his wife are done having children, but they asked my husband and I if next time we have a child, we would be willing to bank our cord blood for my niece. Of course we would do this, but my SIL and I were wondering if blood type matters at all. My niece and I are not the same. (O- and A+) Or does it have to be a tissue match as well, like with a bone marrow transplant? Does anyone know? Thanks. David, I realize that. And that's why I asked, "does anyone know?". Clearly, Y!A is not the final word. I was just curious. Yeesh. A bit of compassion and knowledge, instead of the lippy response, would have been more appropriate and appreciated.
Cord blood stem cell research for anyone who may know something about it.? I was wondering I know cord blood can be used on siblings and relatives. But what about the uncle of a child who's cord blood is stored. The Uncle is 33 had a stroke. I know there is a developing study on stroke and stem cell's. Would it be possible to use the cord blood on the uncle in hope of reversing the effects left by the stroke? my brother had a stroke Dec. 2007 he can't move anything but his head neck and everything on his face (nose eyes mouth tounge lips ect.) He has had very very slight movement in his wrist. He had a rare stroke only 200 a year have this type I forgot what it was called tho.
Why kill Mini Me when you can use umbilical cord blood, rich in stem cells, as artificial aint worked, right?? Nature's Miracle Substance: Umbilical Cord Blood Aimee Herd - John Mckenzie, Lenny Bourin – ABC News - (Jul 12, 2008) It does not involve the killing of human embryos, and it has been used to treat over 60 diseases, including Leukemia, Sickle Cell Anemia and blood cancers. Umbilical cord blood contains wonder-working stem cells. But all too often this "miracle substance" is simply disposed of. According to Dr. Elizabeth Shpall, head of the M.D. Anderson Cord Blood Bank, it is still a "vast majority" of women who do not realize what they are allowing to be thrown away when they don't allocate their newborn's umbilical cord blood to be donated. Yet, this wonderfully stem-cell-rich substance has been used to successfully treat so many diseases Many pregnant women are simply not aware of the medical value and the opportunity for treatments that can come from donating the cord blood when their baby is born. The fact is, umbilical cord blood is the perfect supply of stem cells OK? Umbilical Cord Blood Retrieval vs Embryonic Stem Cell, Research, which is the better choice? a Nurse told me they could retrieve four times the amount of usable cells from the umbilical cord blood (usually discarded as the after-birth) in comparison to stem cell research. Say what? Why in the world would we go to all the expense and confrontation of continuing Stem Cell Research if this is the case? Anyone have a valid comparison? Islet transplant/stem cells in umbilical cord blood? I have a 7 year old son who has type 1. I found out yesterday that I am pregnant. Cord Blood Stem Cell (Viacord & CBR), Hospital Fees? Both companies Viacord & CBR told me that the doctor who delivers the baby will perform the cordblood to the provided kit that they provided. Stem cells - is the umbilical cord blood banking the only option? My almost 4 y.o. daughter had a birth trauma which resulted in the severe kidney damage. Now I'm about to deliver a baby boy and considering an umbilical cord blood banking just in case it may help her in the future. My friend just told me that she've read somewhere that the umbilical cord blood is not the only way to get the stem cells, which rising a question: does it make any sense to invest almost $5000 in the viacord now? tried to google, but did not find anything on this matter. Have you heard anything? Any links, articles, other resources??? Thank you for any help!
Stem cell cord blood banking companies.? It's been 5 years since I have the service with a cord blood banking company. Every year, they never sent me any invoices, I had to call them and paid over the phone by credit card before and around my son's birthday. My friend who has the same service but from a different cord blood banking company told me that she receives invoices once a year. At first I thought maybe because I called ahead (before my son's birthday) hence they hadn't sent the invoice yet. However, this year, I have forgotten about it, my son's birthday has passed for almost a month now, I still received no invoice. How do I verify if the company does not misuse the cord blood if they don't even bother to send me an invoice? Is the company trying to void the service so they can use the cord blood for their own research? Is there a government institution that controls cord blood banking companies where I could file a complaint or utter my concerns regarding the company?
Why pursue embryonic stem cells when adult stem cells work? Take the following quote: "to date, no approved medical treatments have been derived from embryonic stem cell research (ESCR). Adult stem cells and cord blood stems cells have thus far been the only stem cells used to successfully treat any diseases" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embryonic_stem_cell Adult stem cells are known to cure over 40 diseases, if I'm not mistaken. They are proven to work. So far embryonic stem cells haven't cured even one. Ethical issues aside, why waste taxpayer money on research that has, since it began 10 years ago, accomplished nothing? Why not further pursue the stem cells that HAVE been proven to work? I just don't get it. Everywhere I look somebody is saying "we HOPE it will cure this" and "we BELIEVE it will cure that" and yet there's no evidence that it has or even can cure anything. From what I've read on it, some scientists that have participated in this research don't believe it can cure anything. So how much longer will our money be wasted in pursuing something that's not working?
cord blood banking - ever tried? Did anyone ever try to bank the cord blood stem cells of your baby? if yes, which is the company used? I am in USA and would like to know a company which is best, cheap and can deliever internationally.
How many times the Cord Blood can be used in stem-cell therapy? I've heard its one time. For today's prevailing charges, the cost looks extremely high against it's benefits, if it can be used only once.
Your Medical Opinion on Cord Blood? I had a dual cord blood stem cell transplant last year for leukemia. I have a couple of questions about cord blood that I am interested in (this is not really in relation to my medical case) 1. If a person has the transplant using their own cord blood, is that still considered an auto transplant? Obviously I didnt have my own cord blood, but I almost did an auto peripheral blood stem cell transplant instead. I was given the opinion that ultimatly it would only be a time lengthening proceedure and that chances were high the leukemia would come back. Maybe that was specific to my case (aml, m1, 2nd diagnosis), but would that still be the same if you were to use your own cord blood? 2. Should you be allowed to privatly bank and/or sell cord blood? Everyone I talk to is for private banking, and a lot of people seem to be for selling cord blood. Both of my units came from the public bank. If I had had to have paid for it, buy it from someone else, I would never have gotten it. I wouldnt have the money to bank cord blood if I were to have a child. Because of my experience, I view cord blood as an organ. Organs cant be bought or sold, and I am not sure cord blood should be either (or privatly banked) for the same reason. Its no longer a fair game based on medical need. Its all about who can the most for it. What do you think?
Learn about Cord blood advances from BMT Infonet? Learn About Cord Blood from BMT Infonet Webcast http://www.bmtinfonet.org/webcastcord/ The BMT Infonet website (A support site for stem cell (bone marrow) transplant patients) is doing a webcast on 9/10/08 about the advances of cord blood in stem cell transplant. It looks to be fairly interesting, and it talks about the way I did my transplant, with 2 units of cord blood. If you are at all interested, sign up!
is there a way to be able to store my unborn baby's cord blood for free? We are really interested in cord blood banking only we cannot realistically afford the cost of it. So I was wondering if there was a way I could get free cord blood banking by donating half of the cord blood to stem cell research or something. I live in canada. Does anyone have any ideas for me? My baby is due in June
Storing Cord Stem Cells...? We have been looking into banking our baby's cord blood. It costs around $3000 if you pay upfront - or you can pay $1000 up front and then $150 a year storage fee (cheaper to pay up front). I keep thinking that if something were to happen and we did not spend the $3000 I would not forgive myself but in all likelihood, we will never use it. I am paying close to $6000 to have my baby in a private hospital with my own OB, so if I think it is worth spending this money, $3000 doesn't seem that much, does it? Would you do it/have you done it? We definitely have the money for it without it causing a burden or going without anything - but it is still alot of money to spend on something that you will probably never use.
Should I donate my baby's cord blood? I tend to think donation makes more sense than storage because researchers are still in the process of studying the whole concept of cord blood and stem cells. Also, storage is expensive. What does anybody think?
Regarding saving my baby's cord blood? I am 37 weeks pregnant. I have recently developed a thyroid nodule which is suspicious for cancer.I am going to have a total thyroidectomy. Both my glands are going to be removed.I have to be on hormonal therapy for the rest of my life without my thyroid glands. Today the nurse at my OBG spoke about saving my baby's cord blood. Can stem cells be developed into thyroid glands? Has anyone heard of thyroid gland transplant?
When ones own bone marrow can help cure spinal cord injury, why save umbilical cord blood? The recent report by the Chennai (India) based Japanese group NCRM (http://www.ncrm.org/media/pm12jun07.htm) that one own bone marrow stem cells can cure spinal cord injury, why do we save Umbilical cord blood cells for? I can unserstand that it is useful for Leukemias but whats the probability of one becoming a victim to the disease against the cost efefctiveness based on the outcome? Sometimes it leads me to think there is too much claim for usage of UCB from the industry where you shelve off 3000 USD but silently in India they are offering ones own bone marrow stem cell treatment for spinal cord injury...could any one clarify this controversy?

Stem Cell Research - Banking Blood Cord - PLEASE HELP? I was just watching an amazing video about a little girl who was "cured" of her cerebral palsy using her own stored blood cord from birth http://www.cordblood.com/azfamily1.asp. My question is, if someone were to have a a syndrome, like Retts Sydrome for example where they had a mutation to a gene (in retts the MECP2 mutation) would this mutation also be in the blood cord that was stored - therefore making it a not good source
Would it be possible (using stem cell research) to change a fem ale's stem cell into a sperm cell (a gamete)? What I looked up: The three broad categories of mammalian stem cells exist: embryonic stem cells, derived from blastocysts, adult stem cells, which are found in adult tissues, and cord blood stem cells, which are found in the umbilical cord. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stem_cell) A gamete is a specialized germ cell that fuses with another gamete during fertilization (conception) in organisms that reproduce sexually. In species which produce two morphologically distinct types of gametes, and in which each individual produces only one type, a female is any individual which produces the larger type of gamete—called an ovum (or egg)—and a male produces the smaller type—called a spermatozoon (or sperm cell) in animals, and a pollen grain in higher plants. The creation of gametes is gametogenesis, and during it gametocytes divide by meiosis into gametes. Organs that produce gametes are called gonads in animals, and archegonia or antheridia in plants. The term gamete comes from the ancient Greek γαμετης (spouse). Gametes are haploid cells; that is, they contain one complete set of chromosomes (the actual number varies from species to species). When two gametes fuse (in animals typically involving a sperm and an egg), they form a zygote—a cell that has two complete sets of chromosomes and therefore is diploid. The zygote receives one set of chromosomes from each of the two gametes through the fusion of the two gamete nuclei. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamete) [edit] Production of male gametes Researchers at the Whitehead Institute announced in 2003 that they had successfully used embryonic stem cells to produce haploid, male gametes. They found embryonic stem cells that had begun to differentiate into embryonic germ cells and then further differentiated into the male haploid cells. When injected into oocytes, these haploid cells restored the somatic diploid complement of chromosomes and formed blastocysts in vitro.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embryonic_stem_cell)
Stem Cell Research...Would you agree? I am all for Umbilical Cord Stem Cell research, not embryonic stem cell research. I hate the debates right now in Congress about the morality of stem cell research! Creating a national stem cell blood bank (umbilical cord blood) just like the regular blood bank would save lives. Umbilical stem cells do not take life away, it aides in saving lives. What doesn't the government get? Your opion?
Is banking umbilical cord blood old news or the way of the future? With its use in stem cell research, will banking cord blood be a new craze or maybe even a necessity? And if it is up & coming, then will insurance companies or health care providers cover the cost of it? I'd love to hear from some professionals thanx...
I'm confused about cord blood uses, any help? I've been reading about cord blood banking/uses & embryonic stem cells. What I don't understand is if the use of cord blood is limited? One report I read hinted that cord blood is useful only for immune disorders & some types of cancers. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.
Learn About Cord Blood from BMT Infonet Webcast? http://www.bmtinfonet.org/webcastcord/ The BMT Infonet website is doing a webcast on 9/10/08 about the advances of cord blood in stem cell transplant. It looks to be fairly interesting, and it talks about the way I did my transplant, with 2 units of cord blood. If you are at all interested, sign up! Your article is correct. It isnt as easy as it should be. And I would site the primary reason because there isnt more of a demand for public donation. This is why I posted this link, so that people can educate themselves and then create the demand. I used cord blood for my stem cell transplant to treat leukemia. Luckily, in my current state of NC, that was no big deal. I had the transplant done at a neighboring city hospital, all was cool. My cousin wanted to donate her baby's cord blood, but didnt arrange ahead of time and the only hospital in our county that delivers, does not accept the cord blood. My home state of WV currently has NO delivery hospitals set up to accept donation. I have written letters to the editor about it numerous times, but to no avail. And the other issues it mentions are right on about being confused with embryonic stem cells. I routinely run into people I tell about my transplant who think I killed a baby to fight my cancer and that I should go to hell. And a lot of people dont understand that public donation is available underneath all the ads for the private banks.
How many cures have resulted in Embryonic stem cell research? For about 50 years Embryonic Stem Cells have been studied to cure various ailments and were first found in the 1960's. Is anyone aware of cures produced with this type of research? (embryonic stem cells not to be confused with adult stem cells, umbilical cord, blood and bone marrow methods.
Why do liberals lie and say that Bush is against stem cell research when he is only against killing embryos? Why do liberals lie and say that Bush is against stem cell research when he is all for stem cell research but is only against killing embryos for stem cells? Why is there such a big cover up to keep people ignorant about adult and umbilical cord blood stem cell research. Instead they only want to farm babies and use them for spare parts which means killing them in a laboratory? What is happening to ethics and morality in science today. It seems to be going down the drain. calling me ignorant or other name calling does not change the truth.

For those who support embrionic stem cell research....? Specifically, federally funded research, what do you think of this? The popular and appealing actor Michael J. Fox has taken to the airwaves in Senate battleground states Missouri, Maryland, and New Jersey with a highly misleading ad urging defeat of Republican Senatorial candidates opposing the use of taxpayer dollars to fund new embryonic stem cell line research. He states, "Stem cell research offers hope to millions of Americans with diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.... But George Bush and Michael Steele would put limits on the most promising stem cell research." Mr. Fox and his ads' sponsors are guilty of conflating embryonic stem cell research, which the GOP candidates and many Americans oppose for destroying a human life in the name of curing other people's diseases, with stem cell research in general, which includes adult stem cell research and umbilical cord blood stem cell research. The only limits in question are on federal funding of new embryonic stem cell lines, requiring the sacrifice of new embryos. Private and state-funded research (California voters are spending six billion dollars borrowing money to fund this) is ongoing. The implicit claim that research based on new embryos is "the most promising" is absurd, completely unsupported by the scientific literature, and an insult to voters, based as it is on the assumption that they are incapable of understanding the issue. Too stupid to tell the difference, is the elitist assumption underlying this campaign. Flim-flam is a charitable description. Why would federally-funded research be more promising than state- and privately-funded research? And on what possible basis can the claim be made that embryonic stem cell research is more promising than adult stem cell research? The plain fact is that embryonic stem cell research is proving to be a bust. There are currently 72 therapies showing human benefits using adult stem cells and zero using embryonic stem cells. Scientifically-minded readers can review this medical journal article on the status of adult stem cell research. Adult stem cell therapies are already being advertised and promoted while no such treatments are even remotely in prospect for embryonic stem cell research. The fact is that adult stem cells have already produced remarkable cures, whereas embryonic stem cells have failed. This should come as no great surprise to anyone with a background in high school biology. When an embryo is created by the union of the sperm and egg, the cells begin to divide, creating embryonic stem cells from which all future tissues and organs are derived. Within days, the embryonic cells differentiate into three cell layers - ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. Cells in these layers continue to differentiate into tissues and organs. As the embryo matures into a fetus, child, and adult, some undifferentiated cells of the three types remain in various tissues such as bone marrow, fat, skin and olfactory tissue. These adult stem cells are multipotent: they have the ability to turn into a variety of types of tissues. Successful stem cell therapies cause the DNA in the adult stem cells to further differentiate into more specific types of cells. There is no point in getting the adult stem cell to turn into a less differentiated type of cell, or using the more primitive embryonic stem cells. This would be going backward, in the opposite direction of providing a clinically useful therapy. Difficulties abound with proposed embryonic stem cell therapies. The growth of the more primitive embryonic stem cells is more difficult to control and leads to tumor formation. Recent research suggests brain tumors may result. Additionally, the use of embryonic tissue foreign to the patient can potentially lead to problems with immune rejection of tissue, a problem not encountered in using a patient's own adult stem cells. America is the most formidable medical research center in the world, but it is far from alone in pursuing the potential of adult stem cells. The worldwide effort is impressive and growing. For non-adult stem cell research, a morally unquestionable alternative source exists: stem cells drawn from umbilical cord blood. Already a bank exists in Dubai collecting cord blood stem cells. In short, the claims made in the Michael J. Fox political ads are false and reprehensible, an insult to the voters of Maryland, Missouri and New Jersey, and to all Americans. So far, not a single liberal has responded accuratly to the post. Rather than offer legitimate criticism of the content, they instead choose to engage in creating a stratwman. There is not one single case of beneficial embrionic stem cell research. There are benefits to umbylical and adult stem cell research. If you have to choose where to spend the money, why not develop those lines of research that have already reaped rewards? Also, let the marketplace determine the funding. let private enterprise fund the research. Just do not make the American tax payer fund what is now a scientific pipe dream with no field verifcation. If the private sector research shows promise, then the debate changes. But until embrionic stem cell can get results, it deserves not a dime of my money. When my mom died of liver failure, during her entire sickness, she never supported this research. Do not assume that having a liver disease makes one change their mind. For those that say I am lying, you are full of it. I have no problem with stem cell research. Stem cell research has had success, as I have stated. There is however not a single case of embrionic stem cell therapy having a positive effect or tropism. Fox lied about embrionic stem cell research. That is a fact. People fail to understand the difference between stem cell research and embrionic stem cell research. Read the literature on the subject and you will re-think your position, assuming that you are a rational person. Hell, even Bill Clinton's committee on cloning called called ebrioonic stem cell research the destruction of life.
Embryonic Stem Cells. Research without complete destruction? Can it be done? Can they harvest stem cells from embryos without completely killing the embryo? If the cells can multiply infinitly, why take them all? I don't believe in killing a developing child for use of its stem cells. Regardless of the fact that they are used for medical purposes and they would be disgarded anyway, I think it is still wrong. They have the highest rate of success, vs. adult stem cells. Those can be found in the ear and in some other places. There aren't many successful alternatives to ESC harvesting. I know I might feel differently if MY child had a condition that could be cured with ESC. I would want the best treatment possible. It's good that they have found stem cells in cord blood, but harvesting/preserving it takes thousands of dollars. We were talking about this today in class and I'm trying to find out more. If you don't think it counts as murder, please explain why. Thanks in advance to all serious answers Kelsey
Give me advise on Cord Blood Registry kit (CBR) for second child...do I need this for both children? Here is the deal. We got the first child this Cord (embellical cord) Blood Registry kit. Basically, it freezes the childs embelical cord blood with the stem cells...incase she would need some organ later in life she could have these stem cells formed into whatever. So...my wife wants this for the second child as well...They told her it is DNA related and that needs to match...however, a sibling could also use the others stem cells with a less successful rate. I just can't buy that info...it just sounds to me like they're trying to sell us some more stem cells... Here is my question (s): Aren't stem cells interchangeble...regaurless of who they came from? Does the DNA really affect the success rate of stem cells? My theroy behind these observations are simple. The debate to stem cell research was spond from scientist wanting to farm embreos...so that tells me that DNA has little or nothing to do with stem cell success...RIGHT? Sorry for the long explanation... However, I need proof / facts or scientific evidance in order to make this argument to my wife...links are welcome. I just feel like it's a line of BS that we need to do this because of the DNA match. to the first answer: There are litterally millions of stem cells in this blood...I mean to be exact we got 183 million from the first childs cord blood...so I heard that one stem cell can be formed to create whatever is needed...
Cord Blood Banking Question...? I am seriously considering stem cell and cord blood banking for my baby. What are your thoughts on it (pros and cons etc) and for those who have this... what company do you think is best to use?
why shouldnt you use cord blood? im writing a paper and taking part in a Biomedical Debate for hosa (health occupations students of america) and im against it and i really dont what is bad bout cord blood besides its stem cell im writing a paper and taking part in a Biomedical Debate for hosa (health occupations students of america) and im against it and i really dont what is bad bout cord blood besides its stem cell and its not that im against it. i just have to write why some one would be
What is the best umbilical cord blood stem cell preservation company? Please only answer IF you or someone you know has banked their babies cord blood.
Did you know cord blood can save lives? Did you know that the ambilical cord blood can save lives of kids with cancer? Why is it not a mandatory question that mothers giving birth get asked? Is it an option anywhere in the world? & how can we let more people know this information? The stem cells taken from the ambilical cord can be grown to help grow what kids need to recover from lukemia. Some older children need twins cord blood, but in most younger childrens cases one is enough as long as it is of the right blood type and covers all the cross matching. We live in australia and it has become obvious to me that it it more well known about with in america, here in australia it is not so well known, i only found out by being in a bad situation and needing to spend time with people whom have children with cancer, this was a huge eye opener to me

Christians: What are your thoughts on stem-cell research? Specifically stem-cells from umbilical cord blood(noncontroversial) already being used to treat diseases? Do you have any reservations concerning this? Your kind thoughts. Wise Duck - Exactly. I was just reading an inter-net article on this, and the science behind it is utterly amazing. Parents can actually start a 'Baby Bank" with their babies umbilical blood to store for future purposes. This stuff is really exciting!!!!! Wise Duck - Exactly. Stem Cell Research? An embryo is considered "alive" after 3 months of conception - so, i want to ask, are stem cells harvested before or after 3 months? Does the harvesting harm the embryo? Now please, Im quite aware of the other stem cells (adult, cord blood, etc) but my questions regards EMBRYONIC cells. This is a question, not a debate topic. Please refrain from starting one. Thank you.
what are the cons of stem cell research? i am doing a project for school and i need to know the cons of stem cell research (including stem cells derived from cord blood, adult bone marrow, and the embryo), but i already know the ethical issues of embryonic stem cell research. It would also be helpful to know the cost of such research. Thanks :)
Stem cells, how can Bush be so medieval and still be wasting oxygen?!? Once again he's vetoed stem cell research caving to the releious nuts! over half of the citizens of the USA are for this. Stems cells can and do come from cord blood. Why are religeous right wing KOOKS so threatened by a science that coudl save so many lifves? how did I know there'd be igits..lol babies don't have to be killed to get the stem cells. stem cells come from other places... and the guy that made the comment about diagbetes? Mine is GONE.. there is a cure... at least for type one if you get before it kills the pancreas. one of the causes is the wood alchohol used in cleaning food processing equipement. its in your food and they don;t have to tell you about it. Thats what happens when you can pay off the FDA. the answers are simple. thing, learn and research. QUESTION EVERYTHING THEY TELL YOU!
Why not stem cell research? Why do so many people oppose stem cell research? YA YA YA I know the whole debate about using aborted baby’s and unused embryos,(yes I’m pro choice) But do you people opposed to stem cell reacherch know there are other sources for stem cells? Like umbilical cord blood! You can donate your baby’s umbilical cord blood after it’s born and they use the stem cells in the cord blood for research, if you don’t donate it they just throw it away. So what’s the problem with that? Ill tell you what To appease all you prolifers what do you say we stop using aborted baby’s and unused embryos for research and just use umbilical cord blood, would that make you happy? That way we can continue the life saving research and both sides will be satisfied.
Another question.? I'm thinking about banking my baby's umbilical cord blood stem cells. I've read where using them can cure osteoporosis. I don't know. I signed up at baby zone after I was pregnant and the sent me E-mails on it. Has anyone else done this? My husband's sister had Hurler's, we both have diabetic's in our family. (our Mom's are both "border line" diabetic's) I have osteoporosis. No family history of it, just me, Also osteoarthritis. I'm already increasing my 8 year old daughter's calcium by drinking more milk a day. Of course she loves milk.

Is it worth to store Stem Sells? We are thinking of storing our expectant child's stem cells from their cord blood. Does anyone know whether its worth? What is the significance of storing stem cells?
concentration of hematopoietic stem cells? what is the concentration of hematopoietic stem cells in umbilical cord blood?
opinions on cord blood banking? i'm 21 weeks pregnant with twins. my husband and i were looking into cord blood banking and i was wondering what other's thought about it. my doctor said that if the child gets a disease that the stem cells in the cord blood would already be bad. would it make more sense to just wait and if something does happen, just get pregnant again and bank that child's cord blood? would you have it done? have you had it done? if not, why? thanks!
What Country has the best treatment for stem cell research regarding Spinal Cord Injury? I have researched that China has a good program with umbilical cord blood that they store for different types of blood .
Stem Cells? Most of you know I am all up on the stem cell thing and that I am a stem cell transplant. Ok, on another board, I ran into this guy who was desperate to help his kid who has an auto immune disease. He was wanting to know about a specific company in China offering stem cell therapy. Given that stem cell transplants are ni trials for a lot of auto immune diseases, I was curious and looked into it further. This company is touting a ton of misinformation about stem cell transplant and cord blood. The guy forwarded some information from the company to me. I am only about 10 pages into a 50 page packet, but they are comparing themselves every way to a bone marrow transplant, but saying that by using cord blood there is no chance of rejection, that they dont have to kill the exisiting marrow, they dont have to worry about rejection because cord blood cant reject. I am floored by this misinformation this person is getting. Is this just money scam? I am even more floored.. I think its a money scam. Seriously. The packet the guy got is supposedly from someone claiming to be a doc from the US in Chine to give her child stem cell treatment. She is advertising to yahoo groups to get other people to join her group to get information to go to China to have this treatment done. The person who emailed this guy the packet has an email at hotmail http://www.beikebiotech.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 That is the site... THe packet goes on to talk about autologous stem cell transplant and a few other things. Its completly bogus, but I cant figure out if this is just a money scam or if they are really getting people to go to China for this. I shouldnt be surprised either way, but... I am angered that people in are spreading this kind of misinformation http://www.beikebiotech.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 That is the site... For medical purposes, which Stem Cell method is better? When i say better i mean what method produces more?Which method produces the best quality stem cells if there is such a thing? Sounds to me like cord blood or embryonic stems seem to be the choice
Why do you have to pay to donate stem cells from pregnancy? Maybe I'm not doing my research correctly, but from what I have noticed you have to pay to donate the cord blood to companies? Why is that? I'm all for donating cord blood but don't understand why I have to pay for something that is helping someone else? I have done my research and want to donate, but I'm not going to donate if I have to pay. The company(ies) should be paying me for this valuable asset.
What do liberals lie about stem cell research? 1) They claim that republicans want to ban all stem cell research which isn't true they only have objection to one line of stem cells that comes from the destruction of a fetus. 2) Why is so important to use this only source of stem cells when there are other source to get the same material? For example ammonic fluid, cord blood, etc. So if there are other sources why not use them rather create this fire storm of 1 source of stem cells while there are so many other lines available. 3) Give people false hope saying things like Chris Reeves will walk if Kerry gets elected. This wasn’t true because there are no cures for spinal cord injuries using fetal stem cells at this time. 4) Right now there are about 73 cures that come from using adult stem cells and 0 from fetal stem cells. So why go into an area that has shown no promise as of yet? I am not the only one please read the reference in this link and consider it. http://www.stemcellresearch.org/ To sprcpt: You avoided my question. I am talking about the destruction of embros is the only ban. There are other sources of fetal stem cells besides the destruction of embros. Again I still see no one has explain to me why since there are other sources beside the destruction of embros can be used. Rather to use only that the comes from use of the destruction of an embros to make that the sticking point. That is the only line of stem cells that is ban at this time. Pretend it is 1940s and we can get some wonder data on human survial if we only use some people is a few lives worth it.
Can any one throw light on various nomenclature on stem cells? I am looking forward to stem cell based remedy for my sisters son suffering from Cerebral Palsy. The term Stem Cell some one call as "Autologous or self" some say Umbilical cord blood" and some say about the Embryo-stem cell. Which is best. The NCRM team in Chennai have done something phenomenal in spinal injury patient which they say "autologous", but www.emcell.com claims treatment using embryo stem cell...I also read about a stem cell transplant centre in Chennai and some work in AIIMS Delhi, India. One more news I read was about stem cells from nose (Olfactory stem cell) by a chinese scientist....I would like to have lots of explanations from you all... thanks in advance.
