- Ask your doctor or his to get that answer.
- Most successful bone marrow transplants come from related donors, such as siblings. An unrelated donor, however, need to be an HLA match. The latest technology allows us to use cord blood in stem cell transplantation, without the need to be an HLA match. So your baby's umbilical cord can be used to help your friend. It can be kept viable while frozen in the cord blood banking facility, to be thawed when needed for transplant. As to your friend, he needs to undergo ablative chemotherapy first (to induce another remission) before the actual transplant can be done. Congratulations on your baby!
