Umbilical Cord Blood Bank

Is a Cord Blood Bank a good idea/investment at birth?

Has anyone ever done this and used it? Do you believe it is a good investment? My rate is $2k + $125/yr... I just feel that this is a little much and that if we eve needed to use it, it would be too difficult to pay for the medical procedure to "extract" the blood. Thoughts?

  1. That was my issue too. It's way too expensive. I would consider it if I knew some strange rare disease or illness occurred in my family or my husband's family but the cost is ridiculous.
  2. That is a tough decision but when I first seen the option for doing that I was definitely on board just in case my sweetheart would ever need it.
  3. It's only a good idea to bank it if you know you're going to use it--e.g. You have a family member who's ill now and is going to need it. To put it away for future use when you're not sure you're going to need it is a waste of money, in my opinion, and quite possibly a waste of the cord blood, too. I did not bank my babies' cord blood when they were born for the above reason. I did, however, donate it to be used by others who need it. Most hospitals will give you the option to do that.
