Umbilical Cord Blood Bank

Cord Blood Banking Question...?

I am seriously considering stem cell and cord blood banking for my baby. What are your thoughts on it (pros and cons etc) and for those who have this... what company do you think is best to use?

Public Comments

  1. I am going to bak my baby's cord blood in a public bank, that way I don't have to pay to have it done. It's more for scientific use then too. i'm not going to keep it all to myself....haha. I want it to be able to be used to find a cure for parkinsons.
  2. If you have a family history of conditions that stem cells are used to treat, it could be a great idea. Otherwise, the costs associated will likely never pay off for your child. You might ask whether you can donate the cord cells for anyone who has need or for research, instead. There was recently an article about how cord stem cells may be as flexible as embryonic cells. But they still need to conduct research to find out for certain. As for the best "bank" to use, your hospital or birthing center may already have a relationship with a particular bank. You will have the easiest time dealing with that one. Though you should consider that if you have other children and bank their cord blood, too, you may want to keep them all in one place.
